Now in its eleventh school year, the MIL Sports Spotlight program was initiated by Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. during the 2000-2001 school year; it recognizes exceptional scholar-athletes in the Maui Interscholastic League. 

Athletes are selected by their coaches, in consultation with high school athletic directors and are featured each week of the school year in a personal profile, in a column in The Maui News. Boy and girl athletes are equally represented, as are more than a dozen sports

An end-of-year Athlete Recognition Reception to which athletes and their parents are invited provides additional recognition that encourages and reinforces the positive values exemplified by these young athletes.  Each Sports Spotlight honoree also 'wins' a $200 award for his or her school's athletic program, in the form of an A&B Foundation cash grant.  By the end of the 2010-2011 school year, nearly $110,000 in grants will have been awarded through this program to schools on Maui, Molokai and Lanai.
