Above, A&B Foundation President Allen Doane congratulates Baldwin High School's Trenson Himalaya, one of 84 young athletes featured in the 2005 MIL Sports Spotlight.

The MIL Sports Spotlight program, initiated by Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. during the 2000-2001 school year, recognizes exceptional scholar-athletes in the Maui Interscholastic League.

Athletes are selected by their coaches, in consultation with high school athletic directors and are featured each week of the school year in a personal profile, in a column in The Maui News. Boy and girl athletes are equally represented, as are more than a dozen sports.

Recognition encourages and reinforces the positive values exemplified by these young athletes.  Each Sports Spotlight honoree also wins a $100 award for his or her school’s athletic program, in the form of an A&B Foundation cash grant.  More than $40,000 in grants has been awarded to schools on Maui, Molokai, and Lanai through this program alone.

Meet the 2005 MIL Sports Spotlight athletes, who joined their families, coaches, athletic directors, school principals and the A&B Foundation in celebrating athletic achievement on Maui at the year-end banquet, at the Maui Arts & Culture Center in Kahului.
