A&B FOUNDATION SUPPORTS TWO KCC CULINARY ARTS STUDENTS

Two $500 awards presented; Kauai Coffee® also awards $250 to two students

PUHI, HAWAII – February 17, 2005 – Two Kauai Community College Culinary Arts students, Shanelle Jamoraban and Crecencio Lagazo, have been awarded scholarship awards of $500 each from the Alexander & Baldwin Foundation (A&B Foundation), which is funded by the business activities of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. and its subsidiaries, including Kauai Coffee® Co., Kauai Commercial Co., A&B Properties, Kukuiula Development Co., and Matson Navigation Co.  Two other students, Jasmine Quibilan and Ritchard Cariaga, each are receiving $250 awards directly from Kauai Coffee® Co.  The awards will be presented at an awards ceremony during the Culinary Arts breakfast at Kauai Commercial College on Sunday, February 20, 2005. All of the awardees were selected by the KCC Culinary Arts Scholarship Board, based on the following criteria: demonstrated work ethic/attitude/performance as a team member; service to the community/campus; and both financial need and GPA.

A&B Vice President Stephen Holaday, who serves on the Foundation’s Hawaii Committee and oversees A&B’s agricultural operations, said, “We’re happy to provide this support to encourage and enable promising students to complete their training at KCC’s Culinary Arts Institute.  A&B thinks it is extremely appropriate that culinary talent is developed locally and that the chefs support the use of locally grown agricultural products into their dishes.  A&B grows two agricultural products on Kauai and Maui that are available as culinary ingredients – Kauai Coffee® and Maui Brand® Sugar.”

A&B Foundation Chair Meredith J. Ching said, “Education is a priority for the Foundation, whether it is academic or vocational. We are, therefore, very pleased to be able to help these deserving students achieve their goals in the culinary field.”

Support from Kauai Coffee®

Kauai Coffee® Sales and Marketing Manager Marty Amaro said, “I was honored to serve on the awards selection committee, and can attest to the quality of the students who are receiving the awards.  We’re so pleased that this program is thriving, and are happy to award the two $250 scholarships to Jasmine and Ritchard.”
