A&B FOUNDATION WRAPS UP $1.6 MILLION IN 2010 GIVING

Hawaii Non-Profits Received $1.3 Million, U.S. Mainland Charities $300,000

Employee Service to Charities in Hawaii, on Mainland Noted

HONOLULU -- The Alexander & Baldwin Foundation provided $1.6 million in cash donations to non-profit organizations across Hawaii and on the U.S. Mainland during 2010.  $1.3 million of the Foundation’s 2010 giving went to charities serving a broad range of community needs in Hawaii and the Pacific Islands. An additional $300,000 was granted to non-profits on the U.S. Mainland.  A total of 550 charities were supported by the A&B Foundation. Grants made by the A&B Foundation are made possible by the business activities of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. and its subsidiaries.

Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Stanley M. Kuriyama, also a member of the A&B Foundation’s Hawaii Committee, said, “This past year, our charitable resources and donations increased, thanks to A&B’s improved performance in 2010. We note that our employees’ charitable donations appeared to have rebounded with the economy as well, as evidenced by their personal donations to United Ways in Hawaii and on the Mainland and to other community organizations.”

Kuriyama continued, “I was particularly pleased to note that A&B employees, directors and retirees served in volunteer leadership positions in more than 80 of the charities supported by the Foundation.   A&B’s ongoing support for local charities—through the Foundation and our employees—is a reflection of our enduring commitment to our communities.”

A&B Foundation President Meredith J. Ching said, A&B management, directors, employees and retirees volunteer their time in many ways in the community—not only serving in unpaid leadership positions on non-profit boards, but as volunteers for community groups, youth athletic teams, professional and trade associations, and government boards and commissions as well.    A&B actively supports this involvement, believing that the future of our communities is rooted in the action of individuals.”

Ching added, “With increased resources this year, more support was directed to food, housing, health care, and family support services, up by nearly $40,000 to $675,000.  Education at all levels benefited from nearly $100,000 more than the year prior -- nearly $345,000 provided to all levels of education – from preschool to universities.  Culture and arts organizations received $200,000.

“Our longevity in the Hawaii community and diversity of our business operations across the state help explain the depth and breadth of A&B Foundation support for worthy non-profits in our communities.”

A&B’s statewide subsidiaries in Hawaii include Matson Navigation Company and A&B Properties, Inc.  Its Maui operations include Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company (HC&S), and subsidiaries East Maui Irrigation Company (EMI), Kahului Trucking & Storage (KT&S) and A&B Wailea LLC.  Kauai subsidiaries are Kauai Coffee Company, Kauai Commercial Company and Kukui`ula Development Company. A&B Fleet Services operates on the Big Island.  Matson Navigation Company, Matson Integrated Logistics and Matson Global Distribution Services operate across the United States, in the South Pacific and China.
